Who are the Best Social Media Researchers?

I share with you a question asked by Peter, studying for a Master in Business Studies at the University of Ulster in Belfast, Ireland.

He commented on a recent blog post here, but I thought his question was worthy on its own. He agreed.

To extract and edit:

I have had to listen to traditional marketing lecturers, all year telling my peers and me, about amazing marketing tools and rules, SWOT, Porters, 7 P’s blah blah blah.

I’ve tried to be social media’s voice in the classroom, only to be shot down in grading. I even failed a marketing exam because I was quoting great thinkers from TED.com and also the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk too, rather than expected ‘Porter, 1985? (1985!) which really peeved me.

So I’ve decided to base my thesis for the year with the title Benefits of Social Media to SME Business.

Your website has been a great research tool and I would like to say thanks a mill for your hard work.

Would you be able to help, by listing the academics and writers who are currently doing the top research in the field of social media?

I could share the blogs of people like Forrester Research analyst Augie Ray, Beeline Labs co-founder Francois Gossieaux, Harvard Business School professor Andrew McAfee, Microsoft researcher danah boyd, digital marketer John Cass, and Radian6 community manager Amber Naslund — but to say they are the top researchers is subjective at best.

Who are your picks to guide Peter?
